ICC CEO Geoff Allardice Resigns Ahead of Champions Trophy 2025
New Delhi :
In a significant blow to the International Cricket Council (ICC), CEO Geoff Allardice has resigned from his position just days before the highly anticipated Champions Trophy 2025. Allardice’s resignation comes amid concerns over Pakistan’s preparedness to host the tournament, with a board member hinting that his failure to address the evident lack of readiness was one of the key reasons behind his departure.
Allardice, who joined the ICC in 2012 as General Manager of Cricket from Cricket Australia, was appointed as the interim CEO in November 2021 before being confirmed as the full-time CEO. His resignation has left the ICC in a challenging position as they gear up for the upcoming tournament.
Allardice’s Statement and Achievements
In his resignation statement, Allardice expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve as ICC CEO. He said, “It has been a privilege to work as the CEO of the ICC. From expanding cricket’s global reach to establishing a strong commercial foundation for ICC members, I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved.” The ICC board has now begun the process of searching for his successor.
Jay Shah Praises Allardice’s Contributions
ICC Chairman Jay Shah commended Allardice for his contributions to the sport. Shah stated, “On behalf of the ICC board, I sincerely thank Geoff for his leadership and dedication during his tenure as CEO. His efforts have played a crucial role in advancing cricket globally. We are truly grateful for his service and wish him the best for his future endeavors.”
Champions Trophy 2025: Concerns Over Pakistan’s Preparedness
The Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled to be held in Pakistan from February 19 to March 9, will feature eight teams. India is set to play its matches in Dubai due to ongoing political tensions. However, the ICC faces a major challenge as the venues in Karachi and Rawalpindi are still under construction. Recent images on social media reveal that work is still ongoing at both stadiums, raising questions about whether Pakistan will be ready to host the tournament on time.
This edition of the Champions Trophy marks its return since 2017, with Pakistan hosting as the defending champions. The ICC and cricket fans worldwide will be closely watching to see if the host nation can deliver a successful tournament amidst these logistical challenges.
